What Types of Liposuction Are Available?

Liposuction procedure at Istanbul aesthetic clinic

Five main liposuction techniques are performed at our partner clinics in Istanbul. Each handles fat differently.

Tumescent liposuction. The traditional approach. A solution of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine is injected to swell the fat layer, making it easier to suction. Effective and well-proven. Used for straightforward cases.

VASER liposuction. Uses ultrasound energy to break apart fat cells before suctioning. More precise, causes less trauma to surrounding tissue, and allows for smoother contouring. My go-to recommendation for patients who want body sculpting, not just fat removal.

HD (High-Definition) liposuction. VASER-assisted technique taken further – the surgeon sculpts around muscle groups to create visible definition. Six-pack etching, oblique definition, pectoral contouring. This requires a surgeon with genuine artistic skill, not just technical ability. Not every surgeon who offers HD lipo actually delivers HD results.

360 liposuction. Treats the entire torso circumferentially – abdomen, flanks, lower back, and sometimes upper back. Creates a proportional result rather than treating one area in isolation.

BodyJet (water-assisted). Uses a gentle water spray to dislodge fat. The harvested fat is often used for fat transfer (Brazilian butt lift). Less heat damage to fat cells means higher viability for transfer.

Let me be honest about something: liposuction is not weight loss surgery. It removes localized fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise. If your BMI is above 30, losing weight first will give you a much better surgical result. We turn away patients who expect liposuction to be a shortcut. It isn’t.

What Does the Surgery and Recovery Look Like?

Surgery takes 1–4 hours depending on the number of areas. General anesthesia for multiple areas, local with sedation for smaller cases.

Day 1–3. Compression garment on 24/7. Moderate swelling and bruising. You’ll leak fluid from the incision sites for 24–48 hours (this is the tumescent solution draining – completely normal). Short walks from day 1.

Days 4–7. Swelling peaks then starts subsiding. Bruising shifts from dark to yellow. You can shower. Most patients feel well enough for light activity.

Days 7–10. Flight clearance. You’re still swollen, but it’s manageable. Wear your compression garment for the flight.

Weeks 2–6. Compression garment 24/7 for the first 4 weeks, then 12 hours daily for 2 more weeks. Light exercise from week 3. Full gym from week 6.

Months 2–6. Swelling resolves gradually. Final results are visible at 3–6 months. The body continues to improve as skin retracts over the reduced fat layer.

My partner manages your Istanbul stay – present at consultations, coordinating daily post-op check-ins, and organizing 3 video follow-ups after you return home.

How Do We Choose Your Surgeon?

    VASER liposuction body sculpting technique

Different liposuction techniques require different skill sets. A surgeon who excels at tumescent lipo may not be the right person for HD body sculpting. We case-match based on what you need.

After five years living in Istanbul, I’ve seen the full range: surgeons who deliver genuinely impressive HD results, and surgeons who claim to do HD lipo but produce results indistinguishable from standard lipo. The difference is training, artistic ability, and volume of cases in that specific technique.

Our partners operate in JCI-accredited hospitals in Sisli and Besiktas. Each surgeon is board-certified by the Turkish Board of Plastic Surgery and has a minimum of 10 years’ experience.

Doctors in Istanbul often work in 3–4 different clinics. We confirm the surgeon assignment before you book, and my partner verifies the surgeon is in the operating room on your surgery day.

    Is Liposuction in Turkey Safe?

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures worldwide, and complication rates are low when performed by qualified surgeons in accredited facilities. ISAPS data places liposuction among the safest aesthetic surgeries.

Common (expected): Swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, fluid drainage. All resolve within weeks.

Uncommon: Contour irregularities (lumps or dents, 2–5%), seroma (fluid collection, 1–3%), infection (less than 1%).

Rare: Fat embolism, deep vein thrombosis, excessive blood loss. These serious complications are associated with very large-volume liposuction (over 5 liters of fat removed) and are preventable with proper patient selection and surgical technique.

Safety starts with patient selection. BMI under 30, good skin elasticity, no blood clotting disorders, non-smoker. If you don’t meet these criteria, we’ll tell you before you book – not after you arrive.

Can I Combine Liposuction with Other Procedures?

    Before and after liposuction results

Absolutely. Liposuction is the most commonly combined cosmetic procedure.

    • Lipo + tummy tuck – the classic combination. Lipo contours the flanks and waist, the tummy tuck handles skin and muscle.
    • Lipo + breast surgery – “mommy makeover” packages.
    • Lipo + body contouring – for post-weight-loss patients.
    • Lipo + fat transfer (BBL) – fat harvested from one area is used to augment another.

What Real Patients Ask Us (FAQ)

“Will the fat come back?” Fat cells removed by liposuction don’t regenerate. But remaining fat cells can enlarge if you gain weight. Maintaining your weight post-surgery is essential for keeping your results.

“How much fat can be removed?” Safely, up to about 5 liters in a single session. Removing more increases risk. If you need more volume removed, your surgeon may recommend staging across two procedures.

“Is liposuction better than CoolSculpting?” For significant fat reduction with precise contouring: liposuction, hands down. CoolSculpting (cryolipolysis) reduces fat by about 20–25% per area per session, with no downtime. It works for small, stubborn areas. But for transformative body sculpting, surgical lipo is far more effective.

“What if my skin is loose?” Liposuction alone doesn’t tighten loose skin. If you have significant skin laxity (common after weight loss or pregnancy), you likely need a tummy tuck or body contouring procedure in addition to lipo.

      Your Most Important Questions, Answered

How much fat can be safely removed during liposuction?

The safe limit is typically 5 liters (11 pounds) in one session, though this varies by patient size and health. Large volume liposuction (over 5 liters) requires special protocols and overnight monitoring. For more extensive fat removal, staged procedures 3-6 months apart are safer. Turkish surgeons prioritize safety while maximizing results.

Fat cells removed by liposuction are gone permanently. However, remaining fat cells can expand if you gain weight. Maintaining stable weight preserves results indefinitely. If you do gain weight, it tends to distribute more evenly rather than accumulating in previous problem areas. Good lifestyle habits ensure lasting results.

Liposuction alone works best with good skin elasticity. Mild laxity may improve with skin’s natural contraction, especially with VASER’s tightening effect. Moderate to severe loose skin requires tummy tuck or arm lift. Your surgeon will assess skin quality and recommend appropriate combinations. New technologies like J-Plasma can help borderline cases.

No, liposuction is body contouring, not weight loss. It removes stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet and exercise, sculpting and reshaping specific areas. Ideal candidates are within 30% of ideal weight with good skin tone. For significant weight loss, consider bariatric surgery first, then liposuction for finishing touches.

Light walking starts immediately to prevent blood clots. Week 2: gentle activities like yoga. Week 4: cardio exercise. Week 6: full workouts including weight training. Listen to your body and wear compression garments during exercise initially. High-impact activities should wait 6-8 weeks. Gradual return prevents complications.

Absolutely! Male liposuction is increasingly popular, particularly for love handles, abdomen, and chest (gynecomastia). Men often seek athletic sculpting with six-pack etching. The approach differs from female contouring – maintaining masculine proportions while creating definition. Turkish surgeons excel at gender-specific body sculpting techniques.

Traditional liposuction manually breaks up and suctions fat. VASER uses ultrasound energy to liquefy fat first, allowing more precise removal with less trauma. VASER causes less bruising, enables HD sculpting, provides skin tightening, and allows fat harvesting for transfer. It costs more but delivers superior results for definition and recovery.
